Advice on how to retain a younger workforce has been published this week.

The guide is based around ‘millennials’ or those born after the mid-1980s, and claims that attracting them is “essential” for a successful business future.

According to a recent survey by Deloitte, Millennials want to work for organisations that encourage innovative thinking, develop their skills and make a positive contribution to society.

At a talk in New York last month, Nancy Altobello of Ernst & Young gave give tips on how to attract and retain young talent.

The tips, published by ACAS this week include:

1. Keeping the work interesting: “Millennials don’t want repetitive drudgery and will soon leave if the work does not keep them interested.

2. Pay well: “Millennials face higher monthly costs than any previous generation.”

3. Be flexible about how and where they work: “Millennials value making their own choices about how they work, and want to be judged on what they deliver, not how long they spend in the office.

4. Give feedback: “Millennials are used to instant information, and they want to know how they are doing and how to improve.

5. Train them: “Most graduates expect to be trained by their employer, and it’s the most cost-effective way to improve the skills base of your workforce.”
