GPs at the BMA's LMC Conference in London have voted to move a step closer to paperless practices

GPs at the British Medical Association’s (BMA) Local Medical Committee (LMC) Conference in London have voted to move a step closer to paperless practices.

In a motion put forward by Hull LMC, GPs voted in favour of fully funding the scanning, digitizing and shredding of paper records.

Dr Anthony O'Brien from Devon LMC said David Lloyd George would be unhappy to learn that the envelopes named after him were still being used more than a century later.

All referrals will be electronic by 2018, when it could become part of the national tariff, NHS England (NHSE) has pledged.

NHS England has said that it “has set aside £55 million to reward GPs and hospitals” for switching to digital referrals. However, the press release goes on to say that NHSE will provide “up to £55 million”, casting doubt on the actual figure that will be given.

GPs will be asked to prescribe a set of health and fitness apps with the aim of encouraging patients to improve their health. 

The scheme, which is part of NHS England's Health and Care 2020 programme, will allow approved smartphone apps to use the NHS logo. 

The services will range from diet and exercise tracking apps, fitness coaching and apps that can monitor blood sugar levels.

Chief Medical Officer Dame Sally Davies said it is now "likely" that there will be a handful of Ebola cases in the UK over the next three months. 

Additional safety measures have been announced in order to contain the possible infections.

The study, published in The Lancet, found that patients who receive a telephone call-back from a doctor of nurse following a request for same-day consultation are more likely to require further support compared to patients who see a GP in person. 

Researchers also discovered that telephone triage is no cheaper than care provided through face-to-face appointments.

A report, which was commissioned into the Health and Social Care Information Centre's (HSCICs) predecessor NHS Information Centre revealed the issues and that there were significant administrative delays in recording the release of data and records of the decisions made by doctors were unclear and incomplete.

The urgent phone line’s roll our last year has seen services transferred back to out-of-hours providers after NHS Direct – the biggest supplier – withdrew from all contracts. 

The £33 million will be spent on top of funds from clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) who have had to procure services locally.

Choose and Book, the electronic appointment booking service, has cost the NHS £365 million over the past ten years.

The deadline for rolling out the care.data scheme has been scrapped, officials have revealed

The deadline for rolling out the care.data scheme has been scrapped, officials have revealed. 

The scheme, which aims to improve the sharing of patient records, will only be implemented when “the process is right”, NHS England director for patients and information Tim Kelsey said. 

Care.data will now be tested in between 100 to 500 GP practices this Autumn, ahead of a phased national roll out.

The practices will be tasked with testing, evaluating and refunding the process of data collection, NHS England has revealed.

Telemonitoring is used to monitor patients' health, such as blood pressure readings, from a distance, using a range of technology.

A survey of views on telemonitoring, which is being piloted in Northern Ireland, was published this month.

Plans released by NHS England today will aim to improve the quality of GP care by enhancing patients’ experience of services, supporting and encouraging greater integration of care and providing efficiency benefits for practices by reducing paperwork, freeing up more time for patient care.

EMIS is to withdraw its EMIS LV and EMIS PCS systems from use in England within the next 12 months. 

The move follows new NHS England GP systems of choice (GPSoC) requirements which will be implemented from 1 April 2014. 

EMIS decided that neither EMIS LV nor EMIS PCS can be developed to meet the new requirements.

There has been a sharp rise in healthcare professionals requesting advice on disclosing medical records to third parties. 

In 2013, UK-wide medical defence organisation MDDUS received a 65% rise in the number of calls or emails looking for advice on the matter compared to last year. 

Many members were unsure whether to comply with requests from third parties such as the police or insurance companies.
