There is more pressure than ever before on GP practices to keep good financial records, meaning they need to be up to date, accurate and easily accessible. The slowdown in funding growth is making it increasingly difficult for practices to live within their means and places them under tremendous pressure to get their finances in order.

Some GP practices had to close from 12 May while staff at other NHS services also found themselves unable to work.

Management In Practice understands that some GP practices have had to shut down, while hospital staff found themselves unable to work.

Dr George Farrelly, a GP in East London, said his practice did not have access to patient records and could not prescribe medicines.

Dr Farrelly, who works at the Tredegar practice in Tower Hamlets, said his practice had ‘heard something might happen’ earlier in the day so had printed the appointment list.

A group of sixteen practices in the southeast have banded together to form a federation to ease pressure on their resources.

The GP federation for Windsor, Ascot and Maidenhead (F-WAM), will see a group of surgeries from across the borough to share their expertise.

The federation was officially formed on 26 April after a year’s worth of preparation. The group will now have 140,000 registered patients on their list.

A practice in Cumbria more than tripled the number of patients registered for its online services in one week with an 'all-out' information drive.

Following an agreement between the British Medical Association (BMA) and NHS England, practices in England aimed to have at least 10% of their patients registered for Patient Online services by the deadline of 31 March.

General practice must get its fair share of IT funding to have a positive impact on patients, the head of the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) has demanded.

Professor Maureen Baker is calling for at least £440 million of the Department of Health’s £4 billion IT infrastructure cash for general practice.

In a letter to England’s Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt she said the RCGP had championed the importance of good IT for the success of general practice and the wider health service.

Online consultations are now being offered by practices in Basildon and Brentwood.

Patients registered at 37 of the 44 GP practices in the area will be able to speak to their GP online via a specially developed web programme.

The project is hoped to “give them more choice and to improve access” and it was set up following a successful bid for funding from NHS England.

As NHS England prepares to take action against GPs who continue to use 0844 numbers, the system’s owner, the Daisy Group, said it is possible to switch to an 01, 02, or 03 number.
 
Previous reports suggested GPs would be forced to continue to use 0844 numbers because they were locked into contracts.

E-Referrals, as the new system is known, aims to simplify the current patient referral system, which is only used by 50% of GPs.

According to Beverly Bryant, NHS England's director of strategic systems, having only half of GPs use it is worse than having a fully paper-based system.
