Over half of all UK offices will not have any form of Christmas decorations this year, risking employee morale.
For those 42% of offices choosing to get into the festive mood, a survey shows an average of just 19p is being spent per employee on decorations.
The “embarrassing” figure is the lowest amount since office design company Maris Interiors began its survey in 2008 – where the tinsel bill came in at a more respectable 31p.
In further cost-cutting measures, almost nine in ten offices with Christmas decorations described them as “mostly reused” or “entirely reused” from previous years.
Finally, in the most Scrooge-like behaviour of all, only 16% of UK offices will have a Christmas tree.
“If our annual survey on Christmas decorations is a barometer of the economy, it makes quite depressing reading,” said Michael Howard, Chairman of Maris Interiors.
“The mind boggles quite what sort of decorations one can get for 19p – but it doesn’t sound like it would help employee morale.”
