An executive at a primary care trust (PCT) has resigned just days before a disciplinary hearing into allegations that he lied about his qualifications.

Stoke-on-Trent PCT has confirmed that Lee Whitehead quit his post as director of planning and modernisation on 9 August.

The executive, who was reportedly earning £80,000 a year, was due to attend a disciplinary panel on 13 August.

It had been convened to consider allegations “that he did not hold all of the qualifications or membership of a professional body claimed at his time of appointment”.

Mr Whitehead had been employed by the trust for around six months, and is believed to have been responsible for 20 members of staff.

In a statement, the trust said it expects all staff to act with integrity and probity at all times, in accordance with the principles laid down by the NHS.

It added: “The PCT will not tolerate anything less than the highest standards expected of those holding a public office.

“The PCT is satisfied that it has complied fully with all relevant NHS standards and PCT procedures regarding Mr Whitehead, and the matter is now in the hands of the relevant external authorities.”
