The BMA has announced Dr Laurence Buckman is to act as the new chair of the General Practitioners committee (GPC) for the next three years.

The role became vacant when the former GPC chair Dr Hamish Meldrum was boosted to the position of BMA Council chairman in June.

Dr Buckman is a practitioner in north London and has worked as the GPC’s deputy chairman for the past three years.

On his election he said: “I feel honoured and determined. I want to give GPs back hope. I believe we can restore that feeling and can make things be and feel better.”

Dr Richard Vautrey and Dr Nagpaul have also joined the ranks as the new GPC Deputy Chairman and Negotiator.

Dr Nagpul said: “I feel very privileged having the opportunity to contribute to the protection and strengthening of general practice at this vital juncture.”
