1. Employment law for primary care

Why employment law training?
Healthcare professionals are increasingly managing staff as employers or line managers, while at the same time they may be managed as employees.

Employment law knowledge is essential when managing people. Ignorance and/or misinterpretation of the law increase the risk of breach and the potential for grievance and long-term disputes. This commonly affects staff performance, morale, stress and retention.

In addition, the threat of financial consequences through legal battles and compensations is ever increasing.

  • Understand the risks associated with breaches of employment legislation apply your learning to your daily work.

2. Management Skills for Primary Care

Why management training?
All healthcare professionals have some management responsibilities, which range from managing time, career or financial resources, to running teams, and organisations.

The role of primary care is expanding, and GPs in particular are increasingly being expected to take on management responsibilities, including developing business plans, managing teams, participating in clinical governance, commissioning services, liaising with other health and social agencies, delivering new services and initiatives.

There is a clear need for support and training to take on these roles, which has been recognised by the British Medical Association and the Royal College of GPs. Strong clinical leadership is also a key feature of the Darzi report.

Learning about management can assist GPs and other healthcare professionals to use their experience and skills more effectively and efficiently. It can increase their confidence in taking on management roles in primary care, which could result in improved patient care, higher job satisfaction and more effective primary care development.

What we aim to help you with

  • Learn about management in a friendly and interactive environment.
  • Reflect on your current personal and professional practice.
  • Apply your learning to your daily work.

By the end of the course you will have

  • Acquired a portfolio of management tools and models that can be used in daily practice.
  • Experienced a practical and relevant approach to management.
  • Increased your confidence as a primary care team member and manager.
